Text: Business and Administrative Communication by Locker, 7th edition.
Course Description
A comprehensive view of the scope and importance of communications for business, emphasizing the composition of routine letters, sales and claims correspondence, and special situation letters. Employment applications and resumes will be reviewed. Preparation of special written business reports with oral and graphic presentations covering a wide range of business situations is also included.
Objectives
As we survey recent graduates after they land that first job and ask what skills they need that they didn't pay enough attention to in college, every one has indicated that the ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, is most important. It is, then, my primary objective to give you the opportunity to enhance those skills. The objectives of this course are as follows (achievement of these objectives earns you a D):
Demonstrate your understanding of planning, composing, and revising effective
correspondence by achieving a minimum of 70% on various writing exercises.
Demonstrate, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, the ability to write informative
and positive messages, negative messages, and persuasive messages in both letter
and memo forms.
Demonstrate, again with a minimum of 70%, the ability to communicate, work, and
write in groups. (Interpersonal communication)
Demonstrate, with at least 70% accuracy, the ability to analyze information and
write reports, and demonstrate the ability to plan and present effective oral
presentations using graphics and other visuals (including Power Point).
Demonstrate the ability to create your personal resume as well as job
application letters, follow-up letters, etc.
Method of Instruction
You will learn by doing. I will tell you how. I will show you how. You will practice on your own after which you will receive feedback, and then you will show me that you can do it on your own. I have also planned a number of "interesting" activities for you to complete as well.
