Catalog Description:

This course is an introduction to current computer hardware leading to the students’ ability to successfully pass the COMP/TIAA+ Certification exam.

Program Goals:

This course meets the following program goals for the Information Systems Engineering Technology program:

·        Ability to maintain computer system hardware and software

·        Understand the relationship of a modern computer system with peripheral devices

·        Ability to perform detailed computer system diagnosis and troubleshooting

·        Ability to upgrade modern computer systems as required by application of the system.

Course Objectives:

On successfully completing this course, the student will be familiar with the following computer fundamentals:

·        Basic computer structure and principal components

·        Computer/Electronic Troubleshooting techniques

·        Use of computer diagnostic software

·        Ability to correctly identify and install upgrades to computer system

o       Memory

o       Mass storage devices

o       Input/output Peripheral devices

o       Printers

o       Multimedia devices

o       Video display adapters

o       Network interface adapters

·        Proper use of hand tools used in computer maintenance.

·        Component selection and assembly of a basic computer system.

·        Diagnosis of computer power supply systems.

Course Policies:

            Attendance:  Students are responsible for all course content delivered in lecture or lab.

            Homework:  All homework must be turned in on time or will be assessed a ten percent penalty per day late.

            Tools:  Students are responsible to acquire and maintain their own tools to complete lab assignments.  Minimum tools will be identified as part of the course content.  Use of improper tools to complete any assignment will result in a failing grade for that assignment.

            Grading: Course Grading will be based on completed assignments, lab assignments and two examinations.  Weights are assigned as follows:
