Course Description: EET 450 - Advanced Digital Systems (3 semester credits)

This course provides an advanced study of selected digital systems.

Prerequisite:  none

             Competencies assumed:

Beginning college level reading and writing skills

Experience operating a computer or typewriter keyboard

Competencies of CIS 110

Electronic test equipment and terminology familiarity.

            Topics Included:

  1. Microcomputer memory (IC’s, SIMMS, SIPPS, etc)

  2. Bus architectures (ISA, EISA, PCI, and VLB)

  3. Central Processing units

  4. Motherboard Chipsets

  5. Mass storage devices

    1. Hard disk drives

    2. CD Roms

    3. Tape units

    4. Floppy disk drives

  6. Video display systems (adapters and monitors)

  7. CRT fundamentals

  8. Input/Output ports and interface adapters (SCSI, etc.)

  9. Peripheral systems

    1. Printers

    2. Scanners

    3. Video input devices

    4. Digitizers

    5. Plotters

  10. Programmable interrupt controllers

  11. Trouble shooting using disk based software

  12. Trouble shooting using interface adapter cards

  13. Power Supplies

  14. Modems

  15. Network Interface adapters

  16. Network hardware

           Enhanced A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC (3e), Jean Andrews

           Additional reading and research will be required during the quarter to reinforce or enhance the text.  The student will be responsible for reading all assigned portions of the text.  Examinations may cover material, which has been assigned as required reading but not covered in class.

Grading:

            The student's final grade will be determined by a computed average of the scores attained on homework, Labs, examinations, quizzes and projects.  Weighting used in computation of the final grade is;

Homework

Term Papers 30%
Examinations 40%

As an option to the final exam listed above, students may opt to take the CompTIA A+ certification exam.  Attaining A+ certification will satisfy conditions for a grade of A on the final exam.

Attendance:

            Attendance in the lab and in class is left up to the student, however, the student is responsible for all work assigned in class, regardless of whether the student was in class.  The student will not be allowed to make up any quiz missed due to lack of attendance.

Homework:

            - All homework must be handed in on time. 

            - Homework must have a cover sheet indicating

·        Students name.

·        Date the assignment is DUE.

·        Date the assignment is turned in (if different from above)

·        The name of the assignment.

Quizzes:

            The instructor reserves the right to give quizzes, in either lab or lecture sessions on any topic.  This will include both announced and 'Pop' quizzes.  Quizzes may not be made up.

Other Assignments:

            Research of current literature and web sources discussing the topics of this course will be required on a weekly basis.  Research papers or literature reviews will be assigned.
